Hey all you cute as pie couples! As a wedding venue owner near Canton, Ohio, I get to witness countless couples celebrating big milestones. One of my favorite events leading up to the wedding day is the engagement photoshoot. There is nothing more heartwarming than watching the sweet innocence, palpable anticipation and joy of young love is one of the most magical things on this Earth! So, let's take a minute to chat about some chic outfit ideas that will look great and reflect the cuteness and warmth of your love and make you comfortable in front of the camera.
Coordinate, Don't Match ~ Think cohesive and harmonious but you don't have to be identical. Choose shades in the same color palette - we think soft pastels and neutral tones photograph well. If one person is wearing something bold, the other can balance the look by wearing something solid.
Location, location, location. Your venue should influence your outfit. If you are photographing against exposed brick, which can be rustic or industrial, you may want wear outfits made of raw materials like denim, leather, or canvas which reflects that match that environment and creat a rugged, edgy aesthetic. A rustic barn would be the perfect backdrop for you flowy maxi dress and cowboy boots. On the other hand, if you venue is timeless and elegant like a historic site with beautiful architecture, scale up your outfits to complement this setting with pieces like flowy, floor-length gowns and tailored suits, bowties or era-specific attire like 1920's flapper dresses and tweed suits with bow ties.
Consider statement pieces that reflect your vibe. Accessories elevate an outfit but should be overdone. Choose bold statement pieces that reflect your venue and vibe. Chunky boots, wide belts, metal cuffs or geometric shapes look great in an industrial setting, while flowy silhouettes, crochet, lace and a soft color palette complement the beauty of a garden or nature inspired shoot. You want your outfit to look amazing, but your love should take center stage!
Dress for the season. If your shoot is in the fall, consider layers in rich colors like burgandy, mustard, or forest green. Pair a cozy sweater over a romantic, flowy dress for a perfect autumn vibe. Spring? Think florals, light fabrics, light colors and materials that dance in the breeze. Summer is all about and breathable materials and bold colors, while winter begs for layers and cozy outfits with layered looks. Consider chunky sweaters, wool coats, puffer jackets, scarves, hats and stylish boots made of velvet, fur, suede, flannel or denim.
Comfort and function. If you feel good, you look good. There's nothing worse that being in something tight or stiff while trying to look comfortable and natural. Choose outfits that let you move. Opt for fabrics that breathe and styles that let you effortlessly twirl, jump, and embrace. If you must wear pieces that don't are not made for lots of movement, consider an outfit change before or after the shoot so everyone stays positive and energetic throughout!
Shoes tell a story. Let's face it...no matter how fabulous those 4 inch heels look in photos, they have the ability to make your look and mood not so fabulous. If you plan to walk around a park, garden, large venue or to multiple destinations, consider adorable flats or stylish sneakers. If the setting is formal and you must have the stunning heels and polished dress shoes, make sure they're comfortable enough to make the hike and strut your stuff when you get there!
Add elements that reflect your love story. Adding personal touches to our shoot can truly elevate your experience and showcase your unique love story. You might include heirloom jewelry, a special garment gifted to you by your partner or someone special, a dress your significant other love, the outfit you wore on your first date, or a t-shirt from the first concert you attended or your favorite band. These ideas create an intimate and personalized engagement shoot that will let your story show through in each photograph.
